< Back Dr. Yassin Elfaki, BSc, MSc, PhD Head Of Medical Education office Yassin is an experienced Sudanese immunologist with a demonstrated history of working in the research industry. He obtained his BSc and MSc in Medical Laboratory Science from Sudan University of Science and Technology (SUST), specialising in microbiology. He also worked at SUST as a teaching assistant then a lecturer of microbiology and immunology. In 2015, he got a PhD scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), which enabled him to work on regulatory T cell (Treg) development and homeostasis during viral infection under the supervision of Prof Jochen Huehn in Braunschweig, Germany. He then moved to London to work as a postdoc on innate lymphoid cell (ILC) biology in the context of type 1 diabetes, under the supervision of Prof Lucy Walker. Currently, he's working as a senior scientist since 2023 in Oncology R&D, AstraZeneca, leveraging his skills to develop the next generation immune-mediated cancer therapeutics.

Over her 12-year career as a consultant, Dr. Elhag has assumed several leadership roles, including Departmental Lead, Infection Control Doctor, and Antimicrobial Stewardship Lead. He currently serves as the Managing Director of Diag-Net Global Consulting ( www.diag-net.org ) , a global consultancy firm that provides strategic advisory services in diagnostics optimisation, laboratory governance, and health systems strengthening to governments and international partners. Dr Elbireer previously held the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) , where he led continental programs to enhance quality management, laboratory accreditation, and capacity building in collaboration with the WHO , Africa CDC , Global Fund , USAID , and other key stakeholders. Throughout his career, he has worked extensively to strengthen diagnostic systems in low- and middle-income countries, focusing on national laboratory policies, diagnostic network optimisation, and sustainable quality systems. His leadership and mentorship continue to influence laboratory professionals across the African region, with a focus on Sudan.
